As we (seem to) fly between Burlington and Hamilton these days, gearing up for the grand opening of our latest project at The Residences of the Royal Connaught, we discover more and more about this ever-growing, neighbouring city of Hamilton – and we like it!
One of our favourites: Ottawa Street. This street is a designer/art lover/DIY-ers DREAM. It’s an eclectic mix of shops featuring fabrics (gorgeous fabrics!), furniture, wallpaper, antiques, art, collectibles, and of course, food.
The fabric and wallpaper stores are huge warehouse-sized shops. Samples upon samples line the walls; rows of them create a spectacle of colour across the room. The salespeople are likely the owners, with all generations working the floors. They seem always eager to advise, teach, or offer their professional recommendation.
There’s a handful of antique and consignment shops too. Both are great places to find original and one-of-a-kind pieces. Stepping from room to room usually brings back a personal memory or an appreciation for the way things were made way back when. Hand carved ornate dining and bedroom furniture, antique finishings, retro easy back chairs with funky fabrics and intricate light fixtures with a tonne of personality are just a few things you might strike lucky on.
After all the running around there’s nothing better than grabbing a really great coffee or bite at The Cannon – our personal favourite “recharging” pit stop. As there are still lots of final touches to cover as we prep for the newly renovated hotel lobby, we are sure to be in the neighbourhood again and catch up on the latest and greatest. We’ll keep you posted.
